Common Warning Signs of a Clogged Sewer Pipe

A clogged sewer is a serious problem that can manifest itself in numerous ways.  So if you spot any of the following symptoms, you’ll want to contact Plumbtastic for prompt and accurate problem diagnosis and to prevent the problem from getting any worse.

Multiple Fixtures Are Clogged

When a sewer pipe becomes clogged, you’re highly likely to notice via a clogged toilet.  But other drains can back up too, including those in your tub and shower.

Strange Plumbing Behavior

Here are other common signs of a clogged sewer:

  • If flushing the toilet causes a backup there or in your tub or shower, chances are you have a clogged sewer. The flushed water that can’t go down the drain flows back up and comes out at the lowest point.
  • When a sewer pipe is clogged or damaged, air can get trapped inside other plumbing pipes. If, for example, you turn on a bathroom sink faucet and your toilet water starts to bubble, you have a good indication that there’s trouble brewing underground or in a connecting drain pipe.
  • If the water draining from your washing machine causes a toilet to overflow or backs up into the tub or shower, once again the problem might stem from a clogged sewer.

Build-up at The Clean-Out

If you have a main sewer clean-out, you have another means of determining whether or not you’re facing a clogged sewer problem.  Once you’ve located the clean-out, open it either by unscrewing the cap or pulling it open.  Then, check for any waste or water back-up. You should not be able to see water or waste moving up the clean-out pipe, nor should there be any already present.

Damp Grass in Your Yard

If your entire back yard is dry except for one isolated patch, and it hasn’t rained in at least several days, that not only indicates a clogged sewer, but a crack or break that’s causing water and sewer water to reach the surface.
