How Long Do Plumbing Fixtures Last?

How many things would you rather do than call a plumber?  That many, huh?

No, don’t worry, we get it.  When you buy just about anything that costs in the hundreds of dollars, you expect it to last a good long time.  And for the most part, that’s what you can expect from your plumbing.

Here’s a sampling of average life expectancies:

  • blogAcrylic kitchen sinks…50 years
  • Cast iron bathtub…100 years
  • Copper water lines…7- years
  • Enameled steel kitchen sink…5-10+ years
  • Faucets and spray hoses…15-20 years
  • Fiberglass bathtub and shower…15-20 years
  • Gas lines (black steel)…75 years
  • Gas lines (flex)…30 years
  • Showerheads…100+ years
  • Soapstone kitchen sink…100+ years
  • Toilet tank components…5 years
  • Toilets…100+ years
  • Water lines (plastic)…50 years
  • Water lines (copper)…50 years

Pretty revealing, don’t you think?  Especially when you realize that you can hang onto toilets for a lot longer than you might realize simply by replacing the tank components every 5 years or so.

Of course, let’s not forget your water heater – easily the one plumbing system you rely on as much as or more than any other.  The average life expectancy of a storage tank water heater is 10 – 15 years, which means when it hits about the 12-year mark, it’s time to start looking for signs of trouble before they come looking for you.  These include rust around the base, leaking water, less hot water availability, brown tinted hot water, loud noises emanating from your storage tank, and more.

By contrast, tankless water heaters are built to last up to 20 years, perhaps even longer.  That’s because they have fewer working parts, including no storage tank. The right size tankless water heater also delivers all the hot water you and your family might need, even during periods of peak demand.

So, the next time you’re ready to purchase new or replacement plumbing, be sure to ask how long it’s built to last.  Because for a little more money, you might be able to purchase a product that would more than justify the added cost.

At Plumbtastic, helping you receive top value for every plumbing service, repair, and new installation is just part of what you can expect from us.  But it’s a big part, and just one more good reason to entrust your home plumbing needs to us.
