While a water test can tell you a lot about your home water supply, you can learn a lot all on your own.
Take, for example, being able to distinguish between hard and soft water – soft water being the preferred choice. You can be reasonably certain you have hard water conditions should you notice any of the following symptoms:
Your laundry is stiff or dingy
Water with a high mineral content is hard on fabric. If you wash a towel or t-shirt and they feel stiff and scratchy once they’re dry, it could be due to hard water. No amount of rinsing helps because minerals like calcium and magnesium come from the rinse water.
Mineral deposits on plumbing fixtures
If you have white, flaky deposits on any of your plumbing fixtures, you’re seeing dried up mineral deposits, the very stuff that makes water hard. And yet it’s more than unattractive. Mineral deposits can restrict water flow and corrode the inside of your pipes.
Ring around the tub
If you’re getting a dark tub ring after every bath, it’s another clear indication of hard water conditions. Soap scum on your tub, shower doors or curtain is another common indicator.
Dry, itchy skin
Dry skin may be common in the winter – especially if you have a forced air heating system – but a lack of humidity in the air isn’t the only cause. Hard water can leave a mineral and detergent residue on clean clothes that, when combined, are a formidable skin irritant.
Extra soap and shampoo needed
Hard water conditions can cost you money, and not just because they cause plumbing problems. Take doing your laundry, for example. The harder your water, the more detergent you’re going to need to get your clothes clean, and the more times you’re going to have run your clothes through the machine. The same goes for washing your hair and body – you just don’t get the same sudsing action from hard water than soft water provides.
Spots on dishes and glasses
White spots on dishes, flatware and glasses is the equivalent of soap scum in your tub or on shower doors – and yes, another byproduct of hard water.
These aren’t the only symptoms of hard water, but they’re among the easiest to detect.
